Through strong knowledge of the international Automotive environment, customers and competitors, the Automotive Business Line team captures market requirements and defines opportunity for this market to deliver profitable and sustainable revenue. This team is the primary customer and market interface for Automotive. The Business Line Head is responsible for market positioning, pipeline, partnerships, and customer success. The Business Line Head has full P&L ownership and is responsible for the successful delivery of annual and long term financial and strategic goals within the Automotive market.


Three important skills for this role are leadership, technical & commercial, and interpersonal skills. This person must regularly communicate with customers, partners, suppliers, senior management, and internal peer groups to integrate both the voice of our customers and market factors into our plans in order to meet financial and strategic goals.

Purpose of the Role


The Head of Automotive is responsible for the leadership of the Automotive Business Line and is accountable for growing a profitable international portfolio of products, services, and go-to-market partnerships in the Automotive sector to deliver significant growth over the next 5 years.  Automotive is a critical growth market for McLaren Applied. We are developing world-leading technology for the fast-growing vehicle electrification market, particularly our 800v Silicon Carbide Inverter, and require an accomplished Automotive business leader who can build upon our existing pipeline of Automotive OEM customers to bring this product (and others) to market and create a significant Automotive Tier 1 and 2 supplier business in Europe, North America, and Asia.

Principal Accountabilities

STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT: Lead the Automotive Business Line inputs to the annual McLaren Applied Strategic Business Plan. Utilising trends and market analysis to deliver a well-informed strategic road map and quantified growth plan for Automotive market.


STRATEGIC EXECUTION: Full ownership for the successful delivery of the Automotive short and long term financial and market share targets. Leverage experience in the Automotive to:

  • Maximise the sales pipeline size and conversion rate for our world-leading new Automotive electrification technology, together with other products.
  • Identify other revenue growth opportunities for McLaren Applied’s technology and guide the development new Automotive products in collaboration with our Engineering team.
  • Establish key partnerships in Europe, North America and Asia required to grow the business including providers of adjacent technologies and production partners.
  • Maintain existing Automotive customer relationships and further develop these accounts.
  • Formulate and deploy pricing, channel, and production strategies to maximise value creation and oversee major new contract negotiations and delivery.
  • Identify suitable acquisition opportunities to accelerate growth.

SALES GROWTH: Develop product and marketing strategies to secure design wins and volume unit sales in existing Automotive markets (particularly vehicle electrification) and develop new markets. Introduce product marketing and sales programmes to deliver top line sales objectives. Lead and secure major contract wins. Together with the Marketing team, oversee the Automotive marketing campaign.


ORGANIZATIONAL ALIGNMENT: Ensure coordination of strategies, policies and practices with other Business Line leaders, Product Line management, Engineering and Sales colleagues. Responsibilities include:

  • Support the necessary arbitration and alignment of product features and costs with the Product Line Management organisation. Provide longer-term market trends and customer unmet needs to support roadmaps that will result in a pipeline of suitable technologies.
  • Work closely with the Sales team in the UK and overseas, ensure that they are provided with the necessary information and tools to secure new customers, and have sufficient knowledge to be credible in front of the customer.
  • Ensure collaborative, cross-functional working with the Engineering team to support the development and on-time delivery of new products for Automotive customers.
  • Contribute to the broader business through membership of the Business leadership team.


ORGANIZATIONAL CAPABILITY: Manage a small team of direct reports and work together with Human Resources colleagues to retain, grow, and develop talent across the organisation. Drive ongoing organizational capability improvements by supporting improvements to business processes. Mentor across the company as appropriate.


MARGIN ENHANCEMENT: Achieve organizational objectives of growth and profitability through effective market sales management (i.e. optimal product mix, maximized value-based pricing and minimized product cost from market specifications management) and careful management of ongoing contract delivery.


CASH: Working closely with the Product Line leadership, ensure that the product demands are closely aligned with the operational functions, including supply chain. Manage product mixes to maximise cash flows as needed.


MARKET POSITIONING: Ensure McLaren Applied is recognised as a world-class expert and enhance our reputation as an innovator and technology leader in the Automotive market.


Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience


  • Significant experience and track record of winning new Tier 1 or 2 supply contracts in the Automotive sector in the UK and overseas, preferably for electrical/electronic components and systems, delivering against P&L targets.
  • Strong technical background applied in the Automotive sector. Engineering or Science Degree desirable.
  • Technical marketing experience gained in an established engineering or technology business, ideally with leading-edge technologies in fast-growing enterprises (direct experience of vehicle electrification a plus).
  • Strategic foresight, commercial acumen, and financial literacy.
  • Delivery focused and proactive.
  • Ability to undertake a market facing and engaging role, influencing both externally and internally to achieve desired goals.
  • Excellent team and line management skills, able to work successfully in a matrix organisation.
  • Extensive customer facing experience.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Effective and proven interpersonal skills.
